Open collaborative data engineering, making open data easy and safe to use (EN)
01.10.2022 , DOUGLASIE
Sprache: English

Open data could be a source of innovation, democratic access to information and collective action. However, it often contains errors, is unstructured or otherwise hard to use. Working with open data poses high technical barriers to entry, excluding a large amount of potential users. We explore how we can make open data easier to use for everybody - by collaboratively improving it ourselves.

JValue is a research project at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen-Nürnberg that aims to make the use of open data save and easy. We are looking for ways to improve collaboration during data engineering with open data, inspired by the improvements of open source practices in software development.

This talk will present an ongoing research project and connect it to problems in the field of digitalization of an informed society. Large parts of open data are related to government or climate data, and easier access allows a more diverse group of people to build interesting projects based on that data.

Even though this is a presentation, I want to learn more about the challenges that open data practitioners face when working with data. If you have worked on an open data project recently, join me after the talk, I'd love to talk more about your experience!

Philip Heltweg is a doctoral student with the Professorship of Open Source Software at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, interested in open collaboration on data.
